Are you a handicapped Person?
When ask if you are handicapped, we bet you answered, “No.” It is actually quite rare for individuals to consider themselves handicapped. But in a real sense we are all truly handicapped in some significant way. Those are all truly handicapped. Those who are conventionally labeled as handicapped are not that different from you an me – who deny we are handicapped.
People who insist the handicapped find that one of the first (and most difficult) problems is to get individuals to understand and accept their “defect” in reality terms. We know and understand how hard it is for each of you to recognize and accept a handicap, defect or limitation. But we would like you an assist with this inventory of possible handicaps. Simply check those items where you can feel your handicap might be limiting you in certain circumstances. Be honest now!

We have listed only 20 of many handicaps we might have inventoried. But these sufficient I number to get across the idea that each of us is probably handicapped in some significant way – at least potentially. Of course most of us do not allow defect(s) to seriously handicap us. But do you have a fair appraisal of just how limiting your defect(s) might be? Even your best friends usually won’t tell you.
A certain defect of deficiency can be more or less serious depending upon a number of things:
1. Our attitude toward it.
2. Our ability to recognize it and work around it.
3. The kind of work we do.
4. The presence of compensating strength s
5. How others and our culture react to our handicap.
Rehabilitation counselors are specialists who help in correcting deficiencies, to learn acceptance of uncorrectable defects, and to achieve both social and vocational success in proportion to full human potential remaining.
